Combining charismatic stage presence with a voice of sumptuous range, crystalline purity, and rich emotional power, she headlines major productions at the foremost opera houses and festivals worldwide, from New York\u2019s Metropolitan Opera to Austria\u2019s Salzburg Festival. Lauded in an increasing array of leading lyric and dramatic coloratura roles, including Mozart\u2019s Queen of the Night, the signature role with which she has repeatedly broken records, Lewek also wins accolades for her orchestral collaborations and sensitive interpretations of contemporary art song. As the <em>New York Times<\/em> recognizes, \u201csinging like Lewek\u2019s is what the magic of opera is all about.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Lewek continues to expand her repertoire with a series of role debuts in the 2025\/26 season. The soprano makes her highly anticipated debut in the title role of <strong><em>Alcina<\/em><\/strong> in concert performances in Paris, Barcelona and Montpellier with the Ensemble Artaserse and maestro Philippe Jaroussky. Lewek also takes on the role of Elettra for the first time in Calixto Bieito\u2019s new production of <strong><em>Idomeneo<\/em><\/strong> at La Monnaie. Later in the season, the soprano makes another exciting debut in the title role of <strong><em>Salom\u00e9<\/em><\/strong> at the Cincinnati Opera. Lewek reprises her portrayal of Juliette\u00a0in Gounod\u2019s <strong><em>Rom\u00e9o et Juliette<\/em><\/strong>\u00a0in the concert performance with the Orchestre National de France conducted by Clelia Cafiero at the Th\u00e9\u00e2tre des Champs-\u00c9lys\u00e9es. Op\u00e9ra de Nice sees Lewek\u2019s interpretation of Violetta in <strong><em>La<\/em><\/strong> <strong><em>Traviata<\/em><\/strong> staged by Silvia Paoli and conducted by Andrea Sanguineti.<\/p>\n<p>Kathryn Lewek also revisits Mozart\u2019s Queen of the Night in four productions of <strong><em>The Magic Flute<\/em><\/strong>. At the Royal Opera House in London, she joins David McVicar\u2019s production conducted by Marie Jacquot. At the Berlin State Opera, Lewek stars alongside Ren\u00e9 Pape in August Everding\u2019s staging of the opera, which reconstructs the iconic 1816 set design; with the Deutsche Kammerphilharmonie Bremen, she graces semi-staged performances on a four-city tour. In Rolando Villaz\u00f3n\u2019s new production with Roberto Gonz\u00e1lez-Monjas conducting, Lewek stars as the Queen of the Night at the Mozart Week festival. Among other highlights of the concert season is a baroque concert in Madrid with Ensemble Artaserse under the baton of Philippe Jaroussky and two concerts at Carnegie Hall: Handel\u2019s <strong><em>Messiah<\/em><\/strong> with the Oratorio Society of New York and the Classics for Christmas with Musica Sacra.<\/p>\n<p>Highlights of recent seasons include Lewek\u2019s acclaimed debut as Gilda in Verdi\u2019s <strong><em>Rigoletto<\/em><\/strong> at LA Opera and Cincinnati Opera, her first performances as Mica\u00ebla in Nashville Opera\u2019s <strong><em>Carmen<\/em><\/strong>, as well as her house and role debuts as Puccini\u2019s Musetta in Opera Colorado\u2019s <strong><em>La boh\u00e8me<\/em><\/strong>. Lewek also created the soprano role in the 2024 world premiere of<strong> <em>Music for New Bodies<\/em><\/strong>, a DaCamera co-commission from Matthew Aucoin and Peter Sellars, which is soon to be released as a studio album. Lewek portrayed all Four Heroines in <strong><em>Les contes d\u2019Hoffmann <\/em><\/strong>at the 2024 Salzburg Festival, repeating her previous success at Deutsche Oper Berlin and Florida\u2019s Palm Beach Opera; headlined Gounod\u2019s <strong><em>Rom\u00e9o et Juliette<\/em><\/strong> at Palm Beach Opera and Ohio\u2019s Toledo Opera; and starred in the title role of Delibes\u2019s <strong><em>Lakm\u00e9 <\/em><\/strong>at Op\u00e9ra de Nice and in a concert performance with the China National Opera House Symphony in Beijing.<\/p>\n<p>Lewek is today\u2019s reigning Queen of the Night. Since making her first appearance as Mozart\u2019s antiheroine in 2011, she has sung the formidably challenging role more than 300 times with leading companies worldwide. These include London\u2019s Royal Opera House, the Vienna State Opera, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Munich\u2019s Bavarian State Opera, Madrid\u2019s Teatro Real, the Royal Danish Opera, Festival d\u2019Aix-en-Provence, Lyric Opera of Chicago, Houston Grand Opera and New York\u2019s Metropolitan Opera, where she has performed it a record-breaking 73 times. As the New Yorker\u2019s Alex Ross observes, \u201cshe executes this stratospherically difficult role better than anyone alive.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Among other career highlights is Lewek\u2019s Salzburg Festival and role debuts as Ginevra opposite Cecilia Bartoli in Handel\u2019s <strong><em>Ariodante<\/em><\/strong>, with which Lewek travelled to Op\u00e9ra de Monte-Carlo before returning to Salzburg to make her role debut as Eurydice in new staging of Offenbach\u2019s <strong><em>Orpheus in the Underworld<\/em><\/strong>. Other key firsts include her role debuts as Countess Ad\u00e8le in Rossini\u2019s <strong><em>Le comte Ory<\/em><\/strong> at Lyric Opera of Chicago, Teresa in Berlioz\u2019s <strong><em>Benvenuto Cellini<\/em><\/strong> at Barcelona\u2019s Gran Teatre del Liceu, and as Cunegonde, in Bernstein\u2019s <strong><em>Candide<\/em> <\/strong>for Glimmerglass Opera. It was Lewek who created the role of Jessica in the Bregenz Festival\u2019s world premiere production of Andr\u00e9 Tchaikowsky\u2019s <strong><em>The Merchant of Venice<\/em><\/strong>, winner of the International Opera Award for Best World Premiere of 2014. Lewek\u2019s other notable operatic engagements include her portrayal of Konstanze in <strong><em>Die Entf\u00fchrung aus dem Serail<\/em><\/strong> for Lyric Opera of Kansas City, following previous appearances in the role at Deutsche Oper Berlin and Munich\u2019s Bavarian State Opera. She made her house and title role debuts in Donizetti\u2019s <strong><em>Maria Stuarda<\/em><\/strong> at Canada\u2019s Edmonton Opera; gave her first performances as La F\u00e9e in New Orleans Opera\u2019s company premiere of Massenet\u2019s <strong><em>Cendrillon<\/em><\/strong>; and sang Angelica in Handel\u2019s <strong><em>Orlando<\/em><\/strong> on a European tour with Italy\u2019s Il Pomo d\u2019Oro ensemble, after debuting the role at Australia\u2019s Hobart Baroque Festival, for which she won the coveted Helpmann Award. At Toledo Opera, where she is a firm audience favorite, Lewek has made role debuts as Violetta in a new treatment of Verdi\u2019s <strong><em>La traviata<\/em><\/strong>, as Rosina in a new staging of Rossini\u2019s <strong><em>Il barbiere di Siviglia<\/em><\/strong>, and as Zerlina in Mozart\u2019s <strong><em>Don Giovanni<\/em><\/strong>. Since making her house and title role debuts in Donizetti\u2019s <strong><em>Lucia di Lammermoor<\/em><\/strong> at Opera Carolina, in a co-production with Toledo Opera, she has reprised the role for a new production at Op\u00e9ra de Nice.<\/p>\n<p>When Lewek made her Carnegie Hall debut with the Oratorio Society of New York in 2012, she impressed the New York Times with the \u201ccommunicative verve and thrilling beauty\u201d of her performance. This marked the first of her annual performances of Handel\u2019s <strong><em>Messiah<\/em><\/strong> at the venue, for which she has since returned each holiday season with both the Oratorio Society and Musica Sacra New York. Other concert highlights include \u201cCelebrating Leonard Bernstein at 100\u201d with Washington National Opera, Bach\u2019s <strong><em>B-minor Mass<\/em><\/strong> with Chicago\u2019s Soli deo Gloria ensemble, his <strong><em>Christmas Oratorio<\/em> <\/strong>with the Orchestre symphonique de Montr\u00e9al, Orff\u2019s <strong><em>Carmina Burana<\/em><\/strong> with the Dallas Symphony, and Haydn\u2019s <strong><em>Creation<\/em><\/strong> under John Nelson\u2019s leadership. Performing choral works by Bach, Beethoven, Brahms, Carissimi, Handel, Haydn, Mendelssohn, Monteverdi, Mozart, Orff, Verdi and Zelenka, she has appeared at Lincoln Center\u2019s Alice Tully Hall, Carnegie Hall and other venues with ensembles including the Rochester Philharmonic, Santa Barbara Symphony and Chicago\u2019s Music of the Baroque. She also regularly performs in gala concerts and solo recitals nationwide, sometimes in collaboration with her husband, tenor Zach Borichevsky. In response to the global food crisis, the couple recently streamed a special concert to benefit the United Nations World Food Program. Lewek is also dedicating herself to teaching, having held a residency at Belmont University and serving as artist-in-residence at the University of Memphis in 2025\/26.<\/p>\n<p>Lewek made her operatic album debut with a pair of German rarities, Orff\u2019s <strong><em>Gisei<\/em><\/strong> and Weingartner\u2019s <strong><em>Die Dorfschule<\/em><\/strong>, both recorded live for the CPO label at Deutsche Oper Berlin. More recently, two of her Salzburg successes were captured live for Blu-Ray DVD release by Unitel Edition: <strong><em>Ariodante<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Orph\u00e9e aux Enfers<\/em><\/strong>, which was nominated for a 2021 International Classical Music Award. Other operatic releases include Handel\u2019s <strong><em>Apollo e Dafne<\/em><\/strong> and <strong><em>Armida abbandonata<\/em><\/strong>, both recorded with Il Pomo D\u2019Oro for Pentatone. Her star turn in the Metropolitan Opera\u2019s <strong><em>Magic Flute<\/em><\/strong> has twice streamed live to cinema audiences worldwide in the company\u2019s award-winning <em>Live in HD<\/em> series: first in Julie Taymor\u2019s holiday production and then, capturing the soprano\u2019s record-breaking 50th Met performance as Mozart\u2019s Queen of the Night, in the celebrated staging by Simon McBurney. Lewek also performs contemporary American Art Song on two Albany Records titles: <em>Kathryn Lewek sings Cary Ratcliff<\/em>, recorded with the composer at the piano, and <em>Quicksilver<\/em>, which features her account of David Liptak\u2019s <strong><em>Songs for Persephone<\/em><\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>At the 2013 Operalia World Opera Competition, Kathryn Lewek took two top prizes, the highly competitive Audience Favorite Award among them.
