Biography

Azerbaijani Baritone Elchin Azizov is a star soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he has sung numerous leading roles, including Escamilio (Carmen), Giorgio Germont (La Traviata), Rodrigo (Don Carlo), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Lescaut (Manon Lescaut), Count Tomsky (The Queen of Spades), Ibn-Hakia (Iolanta), Prince Igor, Grigoriy Gryaznoy (The Tsar’s Bride). Outside of Russia, Elchin Azizov has sung at the many prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Opera de Lyon, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and the Theatre an der Wien. In 2018 Elchin Azizov was awarded the title of “People’s Artist of Azerbaijan”.

Azerbaijani Baritone Elchin Azizov is a star soloist of the Bolshoi Theatre in Moscow, where he has sung numerous leading roles, including Escamilio (Carmen), Giorgio Germont (La Traviata), Rodrigo (Don Carlo), Renato (Un ballo in maschera), Lescaut (Manon Lescaut), Count Tomsky (The Queen of Spades), Ibn-Hakia (Iolanta), Prince Igor, Grigoriy Gryaznoy (The Tsar’s Bride). Outside of Russia, Elchin Azizov has sung at the many prestigious opera houses, including the Metropolitan Opera, Royal Opera House, Opera de Lyon, Teatro dell’Opera di Roma and the Theatre an der Wien. In 2018 Elchin Azizov was awarded the title of “People’s Artist of Azerbaijan”.

Elchin Azizov kicks off 21-22 season as Scarpia (Tosca) alongside star colleagues Anna Netrebko and Yusif Eyvazov at Müpa Budapest. Together with them he can also be heard on concert stage at Wiener Konzerthaus, Smetana Hall and Teatro Real.

Highlights of the previous 20-21 season include role debut as Mazeppa, appearance as Rodrigo (Don Carlo) alongside Anna Netrebko, Yusif Eyvazov and Ildar Abdrazakov and as Scarpia in a new production of Tosca at the Bolshoi Theatre. Role debut as Paolo in Verdi’s Simon Boccanegra and then scheduled performances as Lescaut in Puccini’s Manon Lescaut at the Metropolitan Opera, as well as Amonasro in concert version of Aida with Yannick Nezet-Seguin at the Festival de Lanaudiere in 19-20 season were cancelled due to the Covid-Pandemic.  

Highlights of the 18-19 season include appearances as Abimelech at the season opening production of Samson et Delila and Ibn-Hakia (Iolanta) with Valery Gergiev at the Metropolitan Opera, role debut as Renato in Verdi’s Un ballo in maschera at the Bolshoi Theatre, and performance as Scarpia at concert version of Tosca, conducted by Yannick Nezet-Seguin, at the Bravo Vail Music Festival.

In 17-18 season Elchin Azizov debuted as Macbeth at Opera de Lyon’s Verdi Festival, as Scarpia (Tosca) at Opera Nacional de Chili and as Gerard in concert version of Andrea Chenier at Budapest State Opera. The last one has been performed alongside star colleagues soprano Anna Netrebko and tenor Yusif Eyvazov, with whom he also participated in Half Around the World Tour, that took place in Japan, New Zealand, Australia, China, South Korea and Dubai in September-October 2017.

Elchin Azizov’s other recent performances include Conte de Luna (Il Trovatore) at Opera-Theatre de Limoges, Amonasro (Aida) at Municipal Teatro Santiago, Iago (Otello) and Macbeth at the Mariinsky Theatre, Rigoletto at Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Centre, High Priest (Samson et Delila) at Teatro dell’Opera di Roma, Ibn-Hakia (Iolanta) with Kirill Petrenko at the Theater an der Wien, Eugene Onegin at the Mikhailovsky Theatre, Gryaznoy (The Tsar’s Bride) at Royal Opera House, Misgir (Snow Maiden), Leandro (Love for Three Oranges), Schelkalov (Boris Godunov), Dr. Falke (Die Fledermaus) at the Bolshoi Theatre. Besides that, in concert he performed The Bells by Rachmaninov with Birmingham Symphony Orchestra and National Symphony Orchestra in Washington.

Elchin Azizov has studied in the Summer Academy “Mozarteum” with Alessandro Milashi, Baku music Academy with Azad Aliyev and at Galina Vishnevskaya Opera Academy with Badri Maisuradze.
