Biography

New Zealand-raised tenor of Tongan heritage Filipe Manu is rapidly establishing himself as one of the most compelling tenors of his generation. In 2024, he became the first singer from the Pacific and Australasia to win the prestigious Tenor Viñas International Singing Competition. A graduate of the esteemed Jette Parker Young Artist Programme at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, Manu has made significant debuts at Covent Garden, Wiener Staatsoper, Opéra National de Paris, and the Staatsoper Hamburg.

The 2025/26 season brings a new wave of international engagements, including Manu’s eagerly anticipated debut at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona as Nemorino (L’elisir d’amore). He returns to the Wiener Staatsoper as Ferrando (Così fan tutte) and travels with the company for his house debut at the Opéra de Monte-Carlo in the same role. Manu also makes a highly awaited return to Opera Australia, making his role debut as Alfredo in La traviata in Melbourne, Regent Theatre. On the concert stage, he rejoins the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra for his first-ever performances of Rossini’s Stabat Mater.

Olga Kulchynska, Filipe Manu: Cosi fan tutte in Vienna

Olga Kulchynska and Filipe Manu return to the Vienna State Opera in Barrie Kosky’s production of Mozart’s Così fan tutte. Kulchynska as Fiordiligi and Manu as Ferrando can be heard in performances on 13, 15, 17 and 19 June 2026. The cast also include Angela Brower, Peter Kellner, Maria Nazarova and Christopher Maltman under the baton of Alexander Soddy.

Filipe Manu: Headline artist at the Festival of Outback Opera

Following an invitation from Opera Queensland, Filipe Manu joins the Festival of Outback Opera as a headline artist. He will appear in the Dark Sky Serenade concert in Winton on May 21 and in the Singing in the Night concert in Longreach on May 23, 2026.

Filipe Manu: Role Debut as Alfredo in La traviata in Melbourne

Tenor Filipe Manu makes his role debut as Alfredo in La traviata, presented by Opera Australia at the Regent Theatre in Melbourne. The production is directed by Sarah Giles and conducted by Giampaolo Bisanti. Performances take place on May 8, 10, 13, and 15, 2026. In addition, the artist can be heard at the 70th Anniversary Gala, a milestone concert event featuring the Opera Australia Chorus and Orchestra Victoria alongside a star-studded line-up of singers celebrating Opera Australia’s 70th anniversary. The concert takes place on May 17, 2026, at the Regent Theatre.
