Biography

Magnus Dietrich has quickly established himself as one of the most exciting lyric tenors of his generation. His repertoire ranges from Mozart’s Tamino, Ferrando and Belmonte to Wagner’s Steuermann (The Flying Dutchman) and Walther von der Vogelweide (Tannhäuser), as well as Strauss’s Leukippos in Strauss’ Daphne, a role he portrayed to great acclaim at Berlin State Opera and in Frankfurt. Critics praise his lyrical phrasing as well as his ardent, dramatic portrayals. With his successful debut as Jacquino in Beethoven’s Fidelio at the Metropolitan Opera in New York, he also achieved international recognition.

In the 2025/26 season, Magnus Dietrich is a permanent ensemble member of Oper Frankfurt, where his roles include Ferrando in a new production of Così fan tutte, Pang in a new production of Turandot and roles in the double bill Der Zar lässt sich fotografieren/Die Kluge. He brings his acclaimed portrayal of Tamino to a new production of Die Zauberflöte at the Salzburg Mozart Week Festival. Concert engagements include Mozart’s Requiem with the Munich Symphony Orchestra, and Haydn’s The Seasons with the Frankfurt Museum Concerts.

Among the highlights of recent seasons, alongside his Metropolitan Opera debut, count performances as Tamino (Die Zauberflöte) at the Berlin State Opera and Semperoper Dresden, as Alfred (Die Fledermaus) under Marc Minkowski at the Musikfest Bremen, Festspielhaus Baden-Baden, and in Valencia, as well as Schubert’s Winterreise in Christian Spuck’s choreographed staging of the cycle. On the concert stage, he appeared in the St John Passion with the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra, the St Matthew Passion and Elijah with the Munich Bach Choir and Orchestra, and Mendelssohn’s Lobgesang under Thomas Guggeis in Frankfurt. He has sung Mendelssohn’s Elijah with Kirill Petrenko and the Berlin Philharmonic, and Schumann’s Das Paradies und die Peri with the Staatskapelle Berlin under Marc Minkowski in Berlin and at Hamburg’s Elbphilharmonie. Magnus Dietrich is also an active recitalist and most recently appeared with Wolf’s Italian Songbook at Oper Frankfurt.

Since the 2023/24 season, Magnus Dietrich has been a member of the ensemble at Oper Frankfurt, where he appeared as Count Hohenzollern in a new production of Henze’s The Prince of Homburg, as Emilio in Handel’s Partenope, as Belmonte in Mozart’s Die Entführung aus dem Serail, as Leander in Nielsen’s Maskarade, and in Der Rosenkavalier.

He appeared with renowned festivals including the International Hugo Wolf Academy, the Bachfest Leipzig, Kissinger Sommer, Festival de Santes, and the Bach Academy France. Concert tours with the soloist ensemble Vox Luminis took him to France, Belgium, and the Netherlands. He also enjoys a close collaboration with conductor Johanna Soller, including as a member of the “capella sollertia” in the concert series Cantate um 1715.

The Munich-born tenor studied with KS Prof. Andreas Schmidt at the University of Music and Performing Arts Munich and privately with Hartmut Elbert. He was a member of the Opera Studio of the Berlin State Opera. Masterclasses with Piotr Beczała, Andrew Watts, Neil Shicoff, Bo Skovhus, and Hedwig Fassbender further enriched his training. Magnus Dietrich is a prizewinner of the German National Singing Competition and a scholarship holder of the Liz Mohn Culture and Music Foundation, as well as recipient of the 2022 Brixen Classics Young Artists Award.

In May 2022, the label MDG released a CD of Brahms duets with pianist Doriana Tchakarova, Felicitas Erb, and Judith Erb.

Magnus Dietrich: Pang in Turandot at Oper Frankfurt

Tenor Magnus Dietrich appears as Pang in Puccini’s Turandot at Oper Frankfurt in Andrea Breth’s new production, conducted by General Music Director Thomas Guggeis. The cast is led by Elza van den Heever in the title role, with Alfred Kim as Calaf and Guanqun Yu as Liù. Dietrich joins Liviu Holender (Ping) and Michael Porter (Pong) as the trio of imperial ministers. Performances take place on 12, 16, 19 and 25 April, as well as 1, 3, 9, 14, 17, 23 and 29 May and 4 June 2026.
