Biography

French mezzo-soprano Gaëlle Arquez is one of the most prominent stars of the opera world. After graduating from the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique de Paris, the young mezzo-soprano made her debut at Opéra National de Paris in Michael Haneke’s production of Don Giovanni (Zerlina) under the direction of Philippe Jordan. Since then, Arquez has established herself on the international stage, performing in leading opera houses worldwide such as the Metropolitan Opera, the Teatro alla Scala, the Opéra National de Paris, London’s Royal Opera House, the Berlin State Opera, Grand Théâtre de Genève, Theater an der Wien and the Vienna State Opera. Celebrated early in her career with a 1st prize at the Wigmore Hall/Independent Opera Fellowship competition and a nomination for “Révélation Lyrique” at the Victoires de la Musique, she released her acclaimed debut album “Ardente Flamme” on Deutsche Grammophon in 2017.

Gaëlle Arquez: @CARMEN THE REEL STORY

On September 12, Gaëlle Arquez appears in the title role of Bizet’s Carmen at the Teatro Auditorio Escorial in San Lorenzo de El Escorial, Madrid. In this new semi-staged production directed by Bárbara Lluch, Arquez is joined by Arturo Chacón as Don José and Tommaso Barea as Escamillo. Alondra de la Parra conducts the Orquesta y Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid. The production offers a contemporary reimagining of Bizet’s masterpiece, transporting the story into the world of social media and exploring desire, identity and power through a modern lens.

Tenor Rolando Villazón, soprano Serena Sáenz, and mezzo-soprano Gaëlle Arquez appear at the PAAX Festival in Mexico, performing with The Impossible Orchestra and the Madrid Community Orchestra and Choir under the baton of Alondra de la Parra. On July 23, Rolando Villazón and Serena Sáenz present ¡Viva la Zarzuela!, a concert celebrating the colour and passion of Spain’s beloved zarzuela tradition. On July 24, Serena Sáenz and Gaëlle Arquez perform Gustav Mahler’s Symphony No. 2, “Resurrection.” On July 26, Gaëlle Arquez stars as Carmen in a semi-staged performance of Bizet’s opera with the adapted title @Carmen. The Reel Story, alongside Arturo Chacón-Cruz as Don José. On July 30, Serena Sáenz and Gaëlle Arquez join Beethoven’s Symphony No. 9, once again under the direction of Alondra de la Parra. All performances take place in the Diego Hall.
