The Persian-Canadian countertenor Cameron Shahbazi returns to the Oper Frankfurt on 16 January 2024 for a solo recital together with pianist Malcolm Martineau. The programme includes works by Henry Purcell, Georg Friedrich Händel and Franz Schubert as well as songs by Louis Armstrong and contemporary Iranian composers. The Met begins the New Year with a vital new production of one of opera’s most enduringly powerful works, Bizet's Carmen. Piotr Beczała as Carmen’s troubled lover Don José shares the stage with young mezzo-soprano Aigul Akhmetshina as Carmen, with Angel Blue as Micaëla, and with bass-baritone Kyle Ketelsen as Escamillo. Daniele Rustioni conducts Bizet’s heart-pounding score and acclaimed English director Carrie Cracknell makes her Met debut.
