Biography

Spanish soprano Serena Sáenz has been praised for her “musicality, good taste in ornamentation and luminous high notes with a good arsenal of bel canto resources” (Scherzo).

She received three awards at Operalia 2022 in Riga: Second Prize in the Plácido Domingo World Opera Competition, the Pepita Embil Zarzuela Prize and the Birgit Nilsson Prize. Despite her young age, Sáenz is a frequent guest at many of the world’s most renowned opera houses.

In 2021 she won the First Prize and the Audience Award at the Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition, the first Spaniard to win these awards. She also received multiple awards at the Paris Opera Competition, as well as at the Francesc Viñas International Competition. Opera Actual 2023 Award to the most promising young artist and Opera XXI Award to the best young singer, that same year.

Serena Saenz: World premiere at Gran Theatre del Liceu

Soprano Serena Sáenz joins the cast of Benjamin a Portbou, a new opera commissioned by Gran Teatre del Liceu and composed by maestro Antoni Ros-Marbà. Sáenz sings the role of the symbolic Angelus Novus in this highly anticipated world premiere. The semi-staged production explores themes of exile and light, with Antoni Ros-Marbà himself conducting at nearly 90 years old. Performances are scheduled at the Liceu on July 19 and 21.

Serena Sáenz: Baroque opera arias at Palau de la Música

Soprano Serena Sáenz reunites with the Vespres d'Arnadí ensemble and conductor Dani Espasa, to perform a selection of baroque opera arias at the Palau de la Música Catalana in Barcelona. The program consists of works by Handel, Rameau and Vivaldi and the concert takes place on July 7.

Serena Saenz: Recital in Klagenfurt

On July 5 soprano Serena Sáenz sings a recital together with pianist Matthias Samuil under the auspices of the festival “Klassik in Klagenfurt”. Together the two present a program consisting of a variety of arias and lieder by Donizetti, Mozart, Liszt and Mendelssohn. The recital takes place in the Burghof Klagenfurt in Austria.
