Biography

Spanish soprano Serena Sáenz has been praised for her “musicality, good taste in ornamentation and luminous high notes with a good arsenal of bel canto resources” (Scherzo).

She received three awards at Operalia 2022 in Riga: Second Prize in the Plácido Domingo World Opera Competition, the Pepita Embil Zarzuela Prize and the Birgit Nilsson Prize. Sáenz, despite her youth, is a frequent guest at many of the world’s most renowned opera houses.

In 2021 she won the First Prize and the Audience Award at the Montserrat Caballé International Singing Competition, the first Spaniard to win these awards. She also received multiple awards at the Paris Opera Competition, as well as at the Francesc Viñas International Competition.

Opera Actual 2023 Award to the most promising young artist and Opera XXI Award to the best young singer, that same year.

Serena Sáenz: Olympia and Giulietta in Les contes d’Hoffmann at the Vienna State Opera

Soprano Serena Sáenz returns to the Vienna State Opera performing the roles of Olympia and Giulietta in Offenbach's Les contes d'Hoffmann on December 13, 16, 19, and 22, 2024. The production, directed by Andrei Serban, features Bertrand de Billy conducting the Orchestra of the Vienna State Opera. Sáenz showcases her versatility by taking on two of the four female roles in this masterpiece of French opera.

Soprano Serena Sáenz makes her highly anticipated house debut at Deutsche Oper Berlin singing the role of Lucia in Donizetti's Lucia di Lammermoor on October 31 and November 5, 2024. The production, directed by Filippo Sanjust, features Ivan Repušić conducting the Orchestra and Chorus of Deutsche Oper Berlin. This debut marks Sáenz's first appearance on the Deutsche Oper Berlin stage in one of the most demanding roles of the bel canto repertoire.
